HK movie starring Louis Koo, Lau Ching Wan, Daniel Wu >> official site
Just in the last couple of months, the cinema in my local area started showing Chinese (canto only so far!) movies. Yes, I do live in one of those areas where it’s well known for its Asian population. When I first moved here, it wasn’t like that! lol. Anyway, this movie is billed as from the makers of “Infernal Affairs” and it doesn’t disappoint. The story talks about three cops [Louis Koo, Lau Ching Wan and one of my fav pretty boys Daniel Wu
] who works as a team assigned to eavesdrop on wrongdoing businessmen. During their shift, they overheard some insider information which they used to buy shares, and of course, became very rich.
I liked the story and is quite fitting for a “share-trading crazy” city like HK. The stock market plays a huge role in HK life and not many people would pass the opportunity of using this information, even if it’s illegal and even worst as the three main roles are policemen. The movie is also not dragging, and keeps its audience on their toes. It is refreshing to see Louis Koo in the role of a “veteran cop”, who is disillusioned about his work and under constant financial pressure because one of his kids is sick. Daniel Wu also has his motivations (although I thought they were less clear than Louis) as he is due to marry into money, with his father-in-law looking down upon his work as a policeman. Daniel probably wanted the money for his pride…. while Lau Ching Wan, Louis and Daniel’s team leader, discovered about his subordinate’s plans almost immediately, but didn’t say anything because he was loyal to his friends. Once the wheels were set in motion, there was no turning back for these characters.
Out of all the movies I’ve seen recently, I would definitely recommend this one. HK films may have a bad reputation these days but every year, there’s still one or two which are worth watching.
